Bats are not only an ecological ally in the battle against pine processionary moths, they also hunt box tree moths and mosquitoes. Installing a bat box encourages their presence near infested areas and reduces the future processionary larvae population.
Bats adapt easily to their environments and live in both cities and the countryside.
In the summer, they set up homes in temporary shelters where food is abundant. During this time, they eat an enormous amount of insects around these shelters. Bats in Europe are insectivorous for the most part. They eat almost half their body weight each night. Their diet consists of various insects-- including mosquitoes, flies, and moths, such as pine processionary and box tree moths.
How does it work?
Where should it face?
The bat house must be exposed to the sun to generate heat on the inside, but not enough for it to be intolerable.
Its placement depends on the climate where you live: facing southeast, southwest, or full south. If you live in a cold or cool region, place it facing full south.
On the other hand, if you live in a hotter region, install the house facing the southeast for sun in the morning and refreshing shadow in the afternoon.
